Paradise on Fire

“When I went out that morning, I never came back.” These are the words Bob Silva spoke to me as I interviewed him inside his newly constructed home. It was five years ago, on this very piece of land, Bob answered his neighbor’s call to help extinguish fires that slowly spread around his neighborhood. Little did he know, when he left his house that morning, it would be the last time he ever crossed the threshold of his front door. In the aftermath of the devastating Camp Fire that ravaged Paradise, California, in 2018, Bob’'s story stands as a testament to resilience, community support, and the unwavering dedication of organizations like International Relief Teams (IRT). Bob, a Paradise resident who, after losing his home and all his possessions in the fire, has been granted a new lease on life with the gift of a brand-new house from IRT. In the face of adversity, Bob found hope. Thanks to International Relief Teams and the kindness of strangers, he has been given a fresh start in a new home, a place where he can rebuild his life, heal, and look toward a brighter future. Bob's story is a reminder that even in the darkest of times, there is always a glimmer of light and a chance for renewal.
